About “Bartleby, the Scrivener”

"Bartleby the Scrivener: A Story of Wall Street" is a short story by Herman Melville. It was first published in two parts in Putnam's Magazine in 1853, with the first part in November and the second in December. It was later included in The Piazza Tales, a collection published in 1856, with slight changes to the text. Some believe the story was influenced by Ralph Waldo Emerson's essay "The Transcendentalist." The story has been adapted into film twice: in 1970, starring Paul Scofield, and in 2001, with Crispin Glover in the lead role.
