About “Pierre, or the Ambiguities”
This Kraken Edition of Pierre, or The Ambiguities is a reconstruction of the text Herman Melville submitted to Harper & Brothers in early January 1852, as negative reviews of Moby-Dick were emerging. The Harper brothers found Pierre even more controversial and offered Melville less than half the royalties from his previous works. Melville accepted the contract but retaliated by adding a new section titled "Young America in Literature," in which he revealed that his hero, Pierre, had been a young author. He inserted an intrusive sub-plot about Pierre as an author, criticizing American literary culture and the publishing world, which remained disconnected from the original story. Scholar Hershel Parker argued that Moby-Dick is best understood through the original version of Pierre, which he called "the finest psychological novel in English." The two works are now seen as interconnected explorations of thought and mood. Additionally, Maurice Sendak's illustrations offer a provocative interpretation of Melville's themes of moral and mental ambiguity.
