About “Broken April”
A 1978 novel by Ismail Kadare set in the Albanian mountains, where the blood-feud code of the kanun governs generations of lives. Protagonist Gjorg, a young mountain man, knows from the first page that fulfilling the kanun will end his own life within a month, while intellectual Bessian romanticizes the peasants' suffering as mythic.
