The General of the Dead Army is a 1963 novel by Albanian writer Ismail Kadare, who was 26 years old at the time of its publication. It is considered his most critically acclaimed work. Kadare was encouraged to write the novel by Drago Siliqi, a literary critic and director of the state-owned publishing house Naim Frashëri.
