About “The File on H.”
The File on H. is a 1981 novel by Ismail Kadare. In the mid-1930s, two young Irish-American scholars travel to the Albanian highlands with an early tape recorder to discover how Homer composed works as long as the Iliad and Odyssey without writing them down, believing the answer lies in Albania's oral epic tradition. Mistaken for spies, they come under surveillance by a nearsighted informer, while their presence stirs local gossip, ethnic tension, and the interest of the town governor's wife.
