About “Cakes and Ale or The skeleton in the cupboard”
Cakes and Ale is a 1930 novel by William Somerset Maugham that satirizes London's literary society between the World Wars. The story follows Alroy Kear, a social climber who is asked by the wife of the famous novelist Edward Driffield to write his official biography. Kear hopes to create a bestseller. However, he uncovers that Driffield's muse and former wife, Rosie, provided him with endless inspiration. Her lively and loving presence once fueled Driffield's work, but her memory now threatens to undermine his respected image and career.
