About “The letter”
The Letter is a 1927 play written by W. Somerset Maugham. It is based on a short story he published in 1924 in Hearst's International Magazine and later included in his 1926 collection The Casuarina Tree. The story was inspired by the real-life case of Ethel Proudlock, the wife of a headmaster at Victoria Institution in Kuala Lumpur. She was involved in a murder trial after shooting a male friend in April 1911. She was eventually pardoned. (Summary adapted from Wikipedia, CC BY-SA 4.0.)
