"Confessions of a Crap Artist," a novel by Philip K. Dick written in 1959 and published in 1975, centers on Jack Isidore, a collector of crackpot ideas and worthless objects so unequipped for real life that his sister and brother-in-law feel compelled to rescue him. Seen through Jack's innocent gaze, his relatives prove just as sealed off from reality, in thrall to their own, slightly more acceptable, obsessions.
