About “De clementia”
De Clementia is a two-volume hortatory essay written by Seneca the Younger in AD 55–56. It was addressed to the Roman emperor Nero during the first five years of his rule. The work is considered incomplete and was intended as a philosophical reflection on the virtue of clemency. Seneca, a Stoic philosopher, used the essay to advise Nero on the importance of mercy and restraint in leadership. The text reflects Seneca’s belief in the moral responsibilities of rulers.
