About “Fields, Factories, and Workshops”

Fields, Factories, and Workshops is an 1899 book by Peter Kropotkin that explores the decentralization of industries, the potential of agriculture, and the role of small industries. Prior to this work, Kropotkin was known for his involvement in international anarchism and writings on Siberian geography. In the book, he aimed to link anarchism with science, drawing on sociological trends. The book was compiled from essays he wrote between 1888 and 1890 for Nineteenth Century and Forum. It was first published in 1899 by Houghton-Mifflin and Hutchinson, receiving positive reviews in Britain. The book was reprinted multiple times, including by Swan Sonnenschein, Putnam, and Nelson between 1901 and 1919. A 1968 edition reprinted the first and second editions, and a 1974 version, edited by Colin Ward, included updated illustrations and was titled Fields, Factories and Workshops Tomorrow.
