About “Mutual Aid”

Mutual Aid: A Factor of Evolution is a 1902 collection of essays by Peter Kropotkin, a Russian anarchist and naturalist. The essays, originally published between 1890 and 1896 in The Nineteenth Century, examine cooperation and reciprocity in both animal and human societies. Kropotkin challenges social Darwinist ideas that focus on competition and survival of the fittest, as well as romantic views of cooperation based on love. He argues that mutual aid provides practical benefits for survival and has been favored by natural selection. The work is seen as a key text in anarchist communism and offers a scientific basis for communal living. Kropotkin highlights mutual aid in animal behavior, early human societies, medieval cities, and 19th-century labor movements, while criticizing the state for undermining these cooperative structures. The book also influenced the study of cooperation in biology.
