The mission involves a mystical quest to raise a sunken cathedral from an alien ocean. The novel explores themes such as repressive societies, fatalism, and the search for meaning. Dick also wrote a children's book, Nick and the Glimmung, set in the same universe, which was published in 1988, after his death.
