The little town of Castle Rock, Maine, is known for strange events and unusual visitors. One story, however, has remained untold—until now. In the summer of 1974, 12-year-old Gwendy Peterson takes the Suicide Stairs daily from the town to Castle View. The stairs, held by strong iron bolts, wind up a cliffside. At the top, she hears children playing and the sound of a baseball being hit. One day, a stranger calls to her from a bench. He is dressed in black jeans, a black coat, and a white shirt, with a small black hat on his head. He asks her to join him, beginning a conversation that will leave a lasting impression on her.
