It is Melville's only novel presented as a literal biography, claiming to document the real life of Israel Potter, a soldier who fought at Bunker Hill. The book also stands as Melville's only historical novel, featuring real figures from the American Revolution, such as Benjamin Franklin and John Paul Jones, in historically accurate settings.
