About “Laüstic”
"Laüstic," also known by several variant titles, is a Breton lai written by the medieval poet Marie de France. The title derives from the Breton word for "nightingale," which holds symbolic meaning in the poem. It is the eighth work in The Lais of Marie de France, a collection of narrative poems. The poem exists only in the Harley 978 manuscript. Like the other lais, Laüstic is composed in the Anglo-Norman dialect of Old French and follows a structure of eight-syllable couplets.
