About “Mirgorod”
Mirgorod is a collection of short stories by Nikolai Gogol, written between 1832 and 1834 and first published in 1835. It was later revised and expanded by Gogol for an 1842 edition of his complete works. The title refers to the Ukrainian city Myrhorod, meaning "city of peace" in both Ukrainian and Russian. The collection portrays provincial Ukrainian life and is connected to Gogol’s earlier work, Evenings on a Farm Near Dikanka, through the subtitle: “Stories which are a continuation of the Evenings on a Farm Near Dikanka.” The final story, “The Tale of How Ivan Ivanovich Quarreled with Ivan Nikiforovich,” is set in Mirgorod.
