Nikolai Vasilievich Gogol was a Ukrainian-born Russian novelist, humourist, and dramatist who lived from 31 March 1809 to 4 March 1852. He is considered the father of modern Russian realism. His early works, such as Evenings on a Farm Near Dikanka, were influenced by his Ukrainian upbringing. His later works, including Taras Bul'ba, Dead Souls, The Inspector-General, Diary of a Madman, The Nose, and The Overcoat, satirized the bureaucracy of the Russian Empire and explored themes of morality and philosophy. Gogol's writing is known for its realism and ethical depth. He spent time in exile and later immersed himself in the Orthodox Church. His works remain significant in world literature.
