About “The Overcoat”
"The Overcoat" is a short story by Nikolai Gogol, published in 1843. It has had a significant influence on Russian literature. Literary critic Eugène-Melchior de Vogüé noted that Russian realist writers were shaped by Gogol's work, saying, "We all came out from under Gogol's Overcoat." Writer Vladimir Nabokov, in 1941, called "The Overcoat" "The greatest Russian short story ever written." The story remains a key piece in Gogol's literary legacy.
