In the early morning hours, a desperate crowd gathers at a job fair in a Midwestern city. A stolen Mercedes plows through the crowd, killing eight and injuring fifteen before the driver escapes. Months later, retired police detective Bill Hodges is haunted by the unsolved crime. He receives a threatening letter from a man who calls himself the "perk" and claims to plan an even more dangerous attack. Brady Hartfield, the killer, lives with his alcoholic mother and craves the rush of violence. Hodges, with unexpected help, must stop Brady before his next attack, which could kill or injure thousands.
