About “On liberty”

On Liberty is a 1859 essay by John Stuart Mill, written with his wife Harriet Taylor Mill. It applies Mill's utilitarian philosophy to the relationship between individuals and society. The essay argues for the importance of individuality as necessary for achieving the highest pleasures, which are the goal of utilitarianism. Mill also warns that democratic systems can lead to the tyranny of the majority. He outlines three basic individual liberties, three reasons for government intervention, and two principles governing the balance between individuals and society.
