About “Redburn”

Wellington Redburn is a fifteen-year-old from New York who dreams of escaping to sea. When he joins the crew of the Highlander, he discovers the harsh reality of life as a cabin boy. He faces mockery from the crew and bullying from a cruel sailor named Jackson. His journey from New York to Liverpool is difficult and filled with suffering. Upon arriving in England, he is shocked by the poverty and moral decay he encounters. Based on Melville's own experiences, Redburn is a story of a young man's transformation from innocence to disillusionment. It offers a glimpse into the mind of one of America's most famous writers. The novel blends a sea journal with a coming-of-age narrative.
