About “The Encantadas”
The Encantadas, or Enchanted Isles is a novella by Herman Melville. It was first published in 1854 in Putnam's Magazine and later included in The Piazza Tales in 1856. The work consists of ten philosophical "Sketches" about the Galápagos Islands, which were often called the "Enchanted Islands" because of the dangerous winds and currents in the area.
