This is the story of Josef Bloch, a mechanic and former football player who quits his job on a Friday morning because he feels fired after the foreman barely acknowledges him when he enters the construction site. He wanders aimlessly through Vienna over the weekend and meets Gerda, a cinema ticket clerk, whom he strangles after their first night together. Later, Bloch takes a bus to a border town to visit an acquaintance. He roams the area restlessly and vaguely notices that the police are following his trail. The novel was published in 1970 by Peter Handke.
