About “Wunschloses Unglück”

Peter Handke's 1972 novella is a reflection on his mother's life and death. His mother, Maria Handke, committed suicide in 1971, and within weeks, Handke began writing to reconstruct her life. He aimed to understand her path and to create a memorial for her. The work does not offer closure or a final judgment, but instead presents an open, painful examination of her existence. Handke considers the social, historical, political, and cultural influences that shaped his mother's life. The novella is a personal and analytical exploration of grief and memory.
