Lewis Haystoun, a dilettante and coward, becomes involved with Alice Wishart during a country house party hosted by Lady Manorwater in the closing years of the 19th century. Torn between conflicting interests and social values, Haystoun ultimately travels to India and attempts to foil a Russian invasion of the British Empire's Hindu Kush frontier, no longer half-hearted in his resolve.
