About “The Iceman Cometh”
The Iceman Cometh is a play written by American playwright Eugene O'Neill in 1939. It was first published in 1946 and premiered on Broadway at the Martin Beck Theatre on October 9, 1946. Directed by Eddie Dowling, the play ran for 136 performances before closing on March 15, 1947. The story follows a group of alcoholic men living in a flop house above a saloon. It focuses on what happens when one of them, the most outwardly successful, chooses to give up drinking and embrace sobriety. The play has been adapted for the screen multiple times.
