About “The Island of the Colorblind and Cycad Island”
Oliver Sacks was drawn to islands because of their mystery and the unique life they hold. He visited the Pacific atoll of Pingelap, where he met a community of people born completely colorblind. He set up a clinic there and listened to their descriptions of a world without color but rich in pattern and light. He also went to Guam to study a long-standing neurological condition. There, he worked with a colleague, making house calls in a tropical setting. Sacks' interest in islands led him back to his love of botany, especially cycads, which have existed since the Paleozoic era. This journey inspired him to reflect on the meaning of islands, the spread of species, and the deep history of the earth. His work offers a personal look at the complexity of human life through the lens of island experiences.
