One of Dickens's standalone ghost stories, the narrative centers on an unnamed narrator who is selected as the foreman of a jury trying a man for murder. Among the jury, an unseen thirteenth juror is perceived by the accused, witnesses, prosecutor, and judge, and after the guilty verdict is delivered, the condemned man claims the trial was unfair because the foreman of the jury was dead against him.
