Nearly five centuries ago, a fleet of boats mysteriously landed on an island in an inland sea. An ancient Andean people hid a golden hoard greater than that of any pharaoh, then both the people and the treasure disappeared into history. In 1998, in the Andes Mountains of Peru, Dirk Pitt rescues two American archaeologists from drowning in an ancient sacrificial pool. This act draws him into a dangerous situation as a sinister crime syndicate tracks the lost treasure—worth almost a billion dollars—from the Andes to a hidden underground river beneath a Mexican desert.
