Clive Cussler (1931–2020) was an American adventure novelist best known for creating the fictional underwater adventurer Dirk Pitt, who starred in a long-running series of action thrillers beginning with The Mediterranean Caper in 1973. Beyond fiction, Cussler founded the real-world National Underwater and Marine Agency (NUMA), a nonprofit that located more than sixty historically significant shipwrecks, including the Confederate submarine H.L.
