Federalist No. 57 is an essay written by James Madison, the fifty-seventh in the series of The Federalist Papers. It was published on February 19, 1788, in The New York Packet. The essay was written under the pseudonym Publius, which was used for all the Federalist Papers. The title of the essay is "The Alleged Tendency of the New Plan to Elevate the Few at the Expense of the Many."
