Detective Harry Bosch, now assigned to the Open-unsolved Unit, is contacted by the district attorney about a serial killer who has confessed to multiple murders. Bosch is tasked with interviewing the suspect regarding a case he has never solved: the murder of a 22-year-old woman whose body was never found. The case remains unsolved, and the new information from the confession offers Bosch a chance to finally bring closure to the long-unsolved murder. The novel follows Bosch as he works to piece together the truth from the killer's statements.
