Jack Reacher, an elite military cop, is sent undercover to Carter Crossing, Mississippi, in 1997, to investigate the death of a young woman. A soldier from a nearby base is the prime suspect, but he has powerful connections in Washington. Reacher is ordered to gather information and then disappear. In Carter Crossing, he meets Sheriff Elizabeth Deveraux, who is determined to uncover the truth. Though wary of each other, they work together to uncover the case's hidden layers. As they dig deeper, they face attempts to suppress the truth, and the conspiracy challenges Reacher's beliefs about his mission. The story explores themes of justice, secrecy, and the cost of uncovering the past.
