Bingtown is a center of trade known for its merchant nobility and unique liveships, rare vessels made from wizardwood that become sentient. The fate of the Vestrit family, one of Bingtown's oldest, depends on the newly awakened liveship Vivacia. Althea Vestrit sees the ship as her rightful inheritance, while her young nephew, taken from his studies to serve on the ship, views it as a burden. The ship's future—and that of the Vestrits—may be determined by an outsider, the cunning captain Kennit, who aims to control the Pirate Isles by capturing a liveship and using it for his own ends. The novel explores the tensions between family, duty, and ambition in a world shaped by magical ships and powerful ambitions.
