About “Pietr the Latvian”

Pietr the Lett was a mysterious international swindler who had been tracked across European borders by Interpol. His true identity remained unknown, with several possibilities suggested—Oswald Oppenheim, a friend of wealthy individuals; Olaf Swann, a Norwegian merchant; or Fédor Yurovich, a Russian drunk. There was also the possibility that he was the dead man found on the Pole Star express. Solving the case required Maigret to use one of his best inspectors and endure a difficult challenge, including a ducking in the sea, to uncover the truth behind one of his most complex identity puzzles.
