John Flanagan's fantasy-adventure saga, The Ranger's Apprentice series, consists of 17 books published between 2004 and 2021, beginning with The Ruins of Gorlan, released in Australia on 1 November 2004. The series originated from twenty short stories Flanagan wrote for his son to encourage reading. It follows Will, an orphan who becomes an apprentice to the Rangers, a secretive group responsible for protecting the kingdom of Araluen. The narrative runs as one continuous arc across the original ten novels and the subsequent Royal Ranger sequels. Will's journey includes training in tracking, stealth, and survival. Later in the series, Will takes on his own apprentice, Maddie. The books were initially published only in Australia and New Zealand but have since been released in 14 other countries.
