About “Spin”

One night in October, when he was ten, Tyler Dupree watched the stars vanish and be replaced by a flat black barrier. This event, known as the Big Blackout, changed the lives of Tyler and his friends, Jason and Diane Lawton. The world went dark, the sun became a featureless disk, and the moon disappeared, though tides remained. Satellites fell from the sky, appearing old beyond their years. As they grew up, space probes revealed the barrier was artificial, created by alien technology. Time moved faster outside the barrier, and Earth had only about forty years before the sun died. Jason became a scientist fighting the apocalypse, while Diane joined a cult. Earth sent machines to Mars, which turned the planet green and sent humans, who returned with stories of a settled Mars. Probes found a similar barrier around Mars. Jason sent self-replicating machines into space to explore. Life on Earth was about to change in strange ways. This is the story of a 2005 novel by Robert Charles Wilson.
