Alberto Moravia was an Italian writer and journalist who lived from 1907 to 1990. He is known for his fictional portrayals of social alienation and loveless sexuality. Moravia contracted tuberculosis of the bone at the age of 8 and spent years in bed and sanatoriums, during which he studied several languages and began to write. He worked as a journalist in Turin and as a foreign correspondent in London. His first novel, Gli indifferenti, was published in 1929 and became a sensation. His other novels include Agostino, La Romana, La disubbidienza, and Il conformista, all dealing with themes of isolation and alienation. He also wrote short-story collections such as Racconti romani and Racconti di Alberto Moravia. Many of his works were adapted into motion pictures. His writing often explored emotional aridity, isolation, and existential frustration. He wrote a book of essays titled L'uomo come fine and an autobiography published in 1990. He was married to the novelist Elsa Morante.
