Dante Alighieri was a Florentine poet, writer and philosopher of the Middle Ages, active circa 1265-1321. According to Jacopo Alighieri, the name 'Dante' is a hypocorism for 'Durante'; in contemporary documents it was followed by the patronymic Alagherii or de Alagheriis, and it was Boccaccio who popularized the form 'Alighieri.'
