Ludwig von Mises (1881–1973) was an Austrian-American economist and a leading figure of the Austrian School of Economics. He earned his doctorate in law and economics from the University of Vienna in 1906. From 1909 to 1934, he worked as an economist for the Vienna Chamber of Commerce. In 1926, he founded the Austrian Institute for Business Cycle Research. In 1934, before the Anschluss, he moved to Geneva, where he taught at the Graduate Institute of International Studies until 1940. He later emigrated to New York City and served as a visiting professor at New York University from 1948 to 1969.
