About “Amphitruo”
Amphitryon is a Latin play written by the Roman playwright Titus Maccius Plautus. It is his only play based on a mythological story. The play survives in most of its parts, but a significant section is missing from the end. The main plot follows Amphitryon, who becomes jealous and confused when his wife, Alcmena, is seduced by Jupiter. The story concludes with the birth of Hercules. A subplot involves Mercury, Jupiter’s son, who watches over the house and plays tricks on Amphitryon’s servant, Sosia, and later on Amphitryon himself. The play is part of the early Roman theatre tradition. (Summary adapted from Wikipedia, CC BY-SA 4.0.)
