"Brokeback Mountain" is a short story by American author Annie Proulx, originally published in The New Yorker on October 13, 1997, for which it won the National Magazine Award for Fiction in 1998; Proulx also won a third place O. Henry Award for it that year. An expanded version appeared in her 1999 collection Close Range: Wyoming Stories, a finalist for the 2000 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction.
