About “Erec and Enide”

Erec and Enide is the first of Chrétien de Troyes' five romance poems, written around 1170. It is one of three completed works by the author. The poem follows the marriage of Erec and Enide and their journey to restore Erec’s reputation as a knight after he becomes inactive. The story is told in about 7,000 lines of Old French and is one of the earliest Arthurian romances, preceded only by the Welsh prose Culhwch and Olwen.
