Paul Auster's fifteenth novel is structured in four interlocking parts. It begins in New York City in the spring of 1967, when twenty-year-old Adam Walker, an aspiring poet and Columbia University student, meets the mysterious Frenchman Rudolf Born and his quiet, alluring girlfriend, Margot. Adam becomes involved in a complicated relationship that leads to a sudden and shocking act of violence, which changes the direction of his life. The novel explores the consequences of this event through its interconnected sections.
