About “The Sailor Who Fell from Grace with the Sea”

The Sailor Who Fell From Grace With the Sea is a novel by Yukio Mishima that follows a group of thirteen-year-old boys who reject adult values, seeing them as false and overly emotional. They embrace a harsh philosophy they call "objectivity." When one boy's mother starts an affair with a ship's officer, the boys initially admire the man. However, they soon believe he is soft and sentimental, which they see as a betrayal. This leads them to act violently against him. The story explores themes of disillusionment, youth, and the rejection of societal norms.
