About “Mazeppa”
Mazeppa is a narrative poem written by Lord Byron in 1819. It is based on a legend about the early life of Ivan Mazepa, who later became Hetman of Ukraine. The poem was quickly translated into French and influenced various artistic works in that country. The cultural significance of Mazeppa was renewed after Ukraine gained independence in 1991.
