Anthony Cade, a good-natured drifter, takes a simple messenger job to deliver the memoirs of a dead European count to a London publisher. The task leads him into an international conspiracy, as the memoirs contain letters that suggest blackmail and reveal secrets about a possible royal restoration. The story also follows Virginia Revel, whose life is plagued by death and mystery. She must find help to clear her name and uncover the truth behind a murder, stolen letters, and a missing jewel. The novel, published in 1925 by Bodley Head and Dodd, Mead & Co., was later adapted as a stage play and a 2009 ITV film.
