Philip Ridgeway, a young banker, is suspected of stealing one million dollars in Liberty Bonds during a transatlantic journey to New York. Hercule Poirot is called upon by Ridgeway's fiancée to investigate the case and clear Ridgeway's name, as the bonds were entrusted to him by his uncle, Mr Vavasour, and Mr Shaw, the joint general managers of the London and Scottish Bank.
