1892–1973·British
John Ronald Reuel Tolkien was a British author and Oxford professor born in 1892, best known for creating the richly detailed mythological world of Middle-earth. His epic fantasy works, including The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, laid the foundation for the modern fantasy genre and inspired generations of writers and readers. He also edited and drafted much of the posthumously published History of Middle-earth series, which documents the deep legendarium he built over his lifetime.
